Being in therapy for years and realizing that white therapists who have not unpacked how many of their practices and approaches to working with clients of color are routed in colonialism…we still need more therapists of color providing mental health resources!! simply telling your client they need to “communicate” and “set boundaries” is not the solution to everything. also when a white therapist urges their black client to move away from home as the only way to solve all of their problems, is a red flag…a lot of these mental health professionals are hyper fixated on individualism rather than collectivism.
This!!! There is an apparent disconnect between black families and white families; when talking to a white therapist, it may not be possible to “move away from home,” because of an understood dynamic within the black community, so I’m glad you highlight that as a way to say we need more Black people within the mental healthcare field.
